Glossary
Data provenance
The record of where each field about a person came from, how it was collected, and when.
Provenance is what makes a deletion request answerable and a retention rule computable. Without it you can delete a row, but you cannot say what you deleted or prove you were entitled to hold it in the first place.
The subtle part is the date. Retention windows have to be computed from when a record was collected, not from when it was last touched. Otherwise a record that gets updated never expires.
What GTM does about it
Source system, collection method and collection date are written on every contact at the write. Retention is anchored to the collection date, never to last-updated. That specific mistake is the one that cost Kaspr €240k.
