LinkedIn limits, and whose account pays for exceeding them

The real ceilings on connection requests, messages and searches, why they are not documented, and how to run volume without losing the account.

LinkedIn does not publish its automation limits, which means every number in circulation is inferred from experience. The numbers below are the conservative end of that range, and conservative is the correct end to be on.

The reason to be careful is specific: the penalty lands on the account, and the account is yours. A restricted personal profile is not a support ticket you can escalate.

The numbers worth planning against

Roughly 20 to 25 connection requests a day for an established, warmed account. Far fewer. Five to ten, for an account under thirty days old or with little activity history.

Around a hundred API-shaped actions a day per account across everything: searches, profile reads, messages. Any single search caps at about a thousand results.

  • Week one: 5 invitations a day.
  • To day 30: 10.
  • To day 60: 20.
  • After that: your own limit, which should still be under 25.

Automation breaches the user agreement, and that is a real risk

There is no compliant automation API for LinkedIn. Any tool doing this is operating against the user agreement, and being told otherwise by a vendor should reduce your confidence in them rather than increase it.

The mitigation is not a clever workaround. It is volume discipline: stay well inside the limits, look like a person, and never run a brand-new account hard.

Discovery is cheap, per-person work is scarce

This is the single most useful thing to understand about LinkedIn sourcing. A search on a post's reactions returns dozens of identities in one call. A profile read returns one person for the same cost.

So prefer the paths that return many people per call, cache company lookups, and budget the fan-out per sweep rather than letting it grow with the list.

What to do with an old account you trust

If the account is genuinely established, the ramp is unnecessary friction. Attest to its age and let it run at your own limit, but keep the limit under the platform ceiling, because being right about the account does not change what LinkedIn does at 40 invitations a day.

The takeaway

Plan against 20 a day, start at 5, and remember that the account taking the risk is the one you use to find your next job.
